Farm Manager – Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trust (CWOT)

Supported by Stephan Louis Chimpanzee Orphanage Support Trust (SLCOST)

Preferred Hours:

6 days per week

About the Organization:

Stephan Louis Chimpanzee Orphanage Support Trust (SLCOST) supports the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trust (CWOT), one of the world’s largest and oldest chimpanzee sanctuaries. CWOT cares for over 155 chimpanzees rescued from the illegal bushmeat and pet trade and is located in Zambia.

SLCOST manages over 650 cattle (Tuli, Boran, Brahman breeds) across 10,000 hectares of Miombo and Dambo forests. Since 2022, the organization has been developing conservation agriculture initiatives to promote sustainable farming and ecosystem protection.

Together, CWOT and SLCOST support more than 70 families (over 400 people, including 150 children) through employment, education, and community programs.

We are now seeking a highly committed and experienced Farm Manager to lead and strengthen our livestock and agricultural operations.

Role Overview:

As Farm Manager, you will be responsible for:

Supervising farm staff and daily operations

Managing livestock breeding, feeding, and health programs

Overseeing crop cultivation and pasture management

Purchasing necessary raw and auxiliary materials

Monitoring cattle markets and optimizing sales

Preparing quarterly reports and annual business plans

Maintaining professional networks and staying current with best practices in livestock management

Supervision & Key Relationships:

Supervisor: Executive Director

Key Relationships: Agriculture Officers, Veterinarian, Finance Manager

Time Commitment:

Minimum of 1 year

Start date: As soon as possible

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Daily Operations

Manage and coordinate all cattle-related activities, including feeding, watering, housing, and health monitoring.

2. Animal Health Management

Implement vaccination, parasite control, and disease prevention programs.

Coordinate with veterinarians for routine check-ups and treatments.

3. Breeding and Reproduction

Develop and maintain a breeding program for optimal genetics and productivity.

Manage artificial insemination, calving, and related activities.

4. Grazing and Pasture Management

Implement rotational grazing and soil conservation strategies.

Monitor pasture conditions and forage availability.

5. Feeding and Nutrition

Develop balanced feeding programs tailored to different growth stages.

Ensure adequate feed resources year-round.

6. Financial Management

Collaborate with the Finance Manager to prepare and monitor budgets and financial reports.

Analyze data and optimize profitability.

7. Staff Management and Training

Participate in recruitment, training, and supervision of farm staff.

Conduct performance evaluations and ensure adherence to policies and safety standards.

8. Equipment and Infrastructure

Oversee maintenance of machinery, fencing, water systems, and handling facilities.

9. Record-Keeping and Data Management

Maintain accurate herd, breeding, production, and sales records using appropriate systems.

10. Market Research and Sales

Identify market opportunities, manage cattle sales, and maintain buyer relationships.

Stay updated on pricing, trends, and regulatory changes.

11. Environmental Stewardship

Promote sustainable farming and comply with environmental standards.

Implement waste management and water conservation initiatives.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Full Grade 12 School Certificate

Degree or Diploma in Animal Science (or related field)

Minimum of 5 years’ experience in livestock or farm management

Valid driver’s license

Strong written and spoken English communication skills

Excellent documentation skills and attention to detail

Demonstrated maturity, reliability, and leadership ability

Additional training in Business Management or Administration is an advantage

Applicants with personal transport (motorbike or car) are preferred — fuel and maintenance costs covered by SLCOST
