Job Description

THE ROLE

Senior Data Scientist

This role is for a commercially-minded data scientist who understands that every regression, every clustering exercise, every forecast has a P&L attached to it and who has already spent a decade proving that in a trading floor.

You will sit within the Metals & Minerals Division, working directly with mining, trading, operations, procurement, logistics and finance teams to turn data into decisions. Your work will directly inform how Berium prices risk, times the market, allocates capital, and structures its position across the critical minerals moving from African operations to global buyers.

You will design and implement data-driven solutions that support strategic sourcing, logistics optimization, risk management, and commercial decision-making across Berium’s minerals and metals portfolio.

Responsibilities you will own:

·       Build and maintain predictive and prescriptive models for commodity price movement, demand forecasting, and supply-chain risk across the metals and minerals portfolio

·       Partner with trading desks to translate market signals, ore grades, production data and macro indicators into models that inform live commercial decisions

·       Design and deploy machine learning solutions for grade control, yield optimization, and logistics/route efficiency between African operations and export markets

·       Extract, clean and structure data from ERP, laboratory, weighbridge, and market data systems using SQL and modern data pipelines

·       Translate complex statistical output into clear, decision-ready visualizations and briefings for traders, executives and mine management

·       Translate business questions into analytical projects, evaluate performance metrics, and recommend actions that improve efficiency, reliability, and sustainability

·       Mentor junior analysts and team members in data science best practices and contribute to the development of scalable data infrastructure and advanced analytics capabilities within Berium Group of Companies.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

This is a senior, high-trust position. We need someone who has already operated at the intersection of quantitative rigor and commercial reality not someone learning it on the job.

Experience:

–  Minimum 10 years of experience within large commodity trading companies, supply chain, and/or mining companies, ideally within metals and minerals specifically

–  Demonstrated track record of data science work that directly influenced trading, procurement, industrial or production decisions not academic exercises

–  Experience working alongside trading desks, mine planners, commercial teams or industrial data operators is essential

Education:

–  Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, or an Applied Science (Physics, Chemistry, or Engineering)

–  Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline required

–  Candidates holding a PhD are strongly encouraged to apply

Must Have Technical Skills:

·       Programming: High-level proficiency in Python or R

·       Database Management: Strong SQL skills for data extraction and manipulation across large, complex datasets

·       Mathematics & Statistics: Solid command of linear algebra, probability theory, and hypothesis testing

·       Machine Learning: Practical fluency in regression, classification and clustering methods, with hands-on experience in scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch

·       Data Visualization: Ability to build clear, executive-ready dashboards and visuals using Tableau, Power BI, Matplotlib, or Seaborn

WHERE YOU’LL BE

This role is based in Zambia, across our Copperbelt and Central Province operations in Zambia; the historic and future center of gravity for African copper and cobalt production. You will work close to the ore body and close to the trading decisions it drives, in one of the most consequential mineral regions on earth.

We welcome international applicants. Experienced professionals based in established commodity trading hubs across Europe and Asia are strongly encouraged to apply. Relocation to Zambia will be required, and Berium International will support qualified international hires through that transition.

WHY BERIUM

Berium Group trades at global scale but operates with the discipline and accountability of a company that owns its supply chain from pit to port. Joining us means:

–  Direct influence over commercial decisions worth real capital; your models won’t sit in a slide deck, they’ll move positions

Recruitment agency directory

–  A seat inside one of Africa’s most active metals and minerals trading operations, with visibility across the full value chain from mine to market

–  The chance to build a data science function almost from first principles, with the backing and reach of a global trading group

–  Competitive, internationally-benchmarked compensation reflecting the seniority and scarcity of this skill set

–  Relocation and support package for qualified international candidates

Berium Minerals & Resources Ltd is an equal opportunity employer. We evaluate all applications on merit, experience, and demonstrated commercial impact.
