Job Description

Position Description

The Barrick Africa & Middle East Team are seeking to recruit Fatal Risk Management Superintendent –  Confined Space and Rotating Equipment  across the following risk areas: Process Mill Operator SME; Chemical / Metallurgical SME; Mechanical Engineering SME; Blasting Engineering SME; Mining Operator SME; Geotechnical Engineering SME; Fire SME; and Rigging SME.

As a Superintendent, you will play a critical role in bridging our risk management standards with day-to-day operations. This position goes beyond compliance paperwork—it’s about proactive leadership. You’ll be expected to independently identify non-compliance and fatal-risk exposures, ensure they are escalated, and drive accountability for resolution.

Your mission is to guarantee that critical controls are not only implemented but functioning effectively to prevent Material Unwanted Events (MUEs) and fatalities. This is a hands-on role for someone who takes ownership and champions safety at every level.

The Superintendent operates within a three-tier governance model:

  • Site Operations (Day-to-Day Accountability)
  • Site based position at the mining operation with direct collaboration on control implementation, verification, and operational barriers.
  • Reports operationally (dotted line) to the Site General Manager.
  • Manages real-time control execution, deficiency triage, and coaching of control owners.

  • Regional Corporate Oversight (Strategic Alignment)
  • Functional direct report to the Vice President of Sustainability – AME.
  • Provides quarterly control effectiveness scorecards and portfolio-level insights.
  • Participates in regional risk forums and cross-site knowledge-sharing.
  • Addresses material corporate-level risks immediately and escalate this no later than within 24 hours.

  • Group Standards (Framework Consistency)
  • Contributes to Barrick-wide fatal risk standards and assurance frameworks.
  • Validates site-specific implementations against corporate standards.
  • Identifies innovations or improvements that should be portfolio-wide.

Responsibilities:

  1. Critical Risk Identification & Ownership

The Superintendent needs to fully own Barrick’s 10 fatal risk categories. This includes maintaining current bowtie analyses, challenging control relevance, identifying emerging risks, and ensuring the theoretical framework aligns with how work is actually performed—not how someone thinks it should be performed.

  1. Critical Control Implementation & Standardization

Accountable for ensuring controls aren’t just documented but consistently implemented across operations. This requires translating bowtie logic into practical work procedures, establishing clear role accountabilities, monitoring compliance through supervision, and resolving practical barriers to control execution.

  1. Critical Control Verification (CCV) & Assurance

Design and execution of CCV programs using checklists that test effectiveness, not just presence. The Superintendent personally conducts daily verifications and ensures the team of Fatal Risk Officers understand control logic deeply enough to detect degradation before incidents.

  1. Auditing & Control Effectiveness Assessment

Conducting three-level assurance reviews (internal self-verification, management review, independent governance review) to confirm controls are achieving the intended risk reduction. Critically, this includes testing whether controls prevent hazards or merely manage consequences.

  1. Control Owner Capability & Accountability

Establishing clear accountability, defining competency requirements, assessing capability, and ensuring control owners have resources and authority to execute. Including succession planning and performance management.

  1. Reporting & Governance

Providing transparent monthly/quarterly dashboards showing verification completion, deficiency status, corrective action closure rates, trend data, and escalating material issues immediately.

  1. Continuous Improvement & Innovation

Benchmarking against industry best practices, evaluating technology solutions for control enhancement, testing new verification methods, and sharing innovations across Barrick’s portfolio.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Technical Specialist in a trade, mining operations or processing environment.
  • Engineering degree would be advantageous but not required.

Experience and Skills Requirements:

  • At least 10 years of experience working on mining sites in developing countries.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement effective controls to reduce risk in the area of speciality.
  • It is essential that the individual in this role has hands-on operational experience, with a solid understanding of Barrick’s Fatal Risk protocols.
  • The role requires a self-starter who can lead confidently and is comfortable addressing constructive conflict when necessary.
  • Proven capability in designing and implementing workplace and career-progression frameworks, as well as supporting succession planning and localization/nationalization initiatives.
  • Ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and strong interpersonal abilities.

What We Can Offer You:

  • A comprehensive compensation package including bonuses and site-specific benefits
  • The ability to make a difference and lasting impact
  • Work in a dynamic, collaborative, progressive, and high-performing team
  • Opportunities to grow and learn with industry colleagues
  • Access to a variety of career opportunities across the organization
