Job Description


Reports To

TROPGAN Director, Laboratory manager.

Job Summary

The Histology Technician will perform the various tasks required for receiving, processing and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the pathologist. This may include logging, batching, and cutting, mounting and staining procedures. Tissue specimens received from endoscopic cases are sorted, logged, and prioritized according to the standards required. Upon receiving written or verbal orders from physicians or their designees, the Histology Technician will coordinate daily workflow of tasks and activities in the pathology area regarding routine or special procedures.

Duties

1. Retrieving specimens from the endoscopy unit

2. Receiving specimens delivered to the laboratory

3. Sorting specimens according to priority and complexity of procedure and keeping records in the pathology log

4. Preparing and storing tissue specimens in accordance with the standardised methods

5. Operating instrumentation for tissue dehydration, section clearing, impregnation with paraffin, cutting tissue sections, and staining of slides

6. Preparing solutions, stains, and reagents in accordance with standards written procedures

7. Operating and maintaining all histology area lab equipment in proper state of readiness, cleanliness, and sharpens and hone microtome knives

8. Recording number of tissue blocks verifying proper identification and label

9. Performing and monitoring inventory of supplies, equipment, and reagents used, and places orders for replacements as required

10. Performing with a minimum of errors- works neatly and with accuracy regardless of volume of work

11. Keeping current with changes in laboratory procedures

12. Organizing work for effective utilization of time

13. Ability to identify priorities when organizing daily assignments

14. Capable of performing a variety of tasks within the scope of job duties

15.Performs other duties as requested by supervisors

Qualifications

1.     Must be a biomedical technician registered with the Health Professional Council of Zambia.

2.     Must hold a grade 12 school certificate

3.     Proficient in both written and spoken English

4.     Histology experience though not required is an added advantage
