Open to Internal/External Candidates

Position Title: Communications Assistant

Duty Station: Lusaka, Zambia

Classification: G4

Type of Appointment: SST – Graded (6 Months with possibility of extension.)

Estimated Start Date: 01 August 2023

Closing Date: 30 June 2023

Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading
UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental
and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly
migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments
and migrants.

Context:

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission (CoM) in Lusaka and direct supervision
of the Migration Health and Gender Assistant/ Communication Focal Point (MH&G/ Com);
and, in collaboration with all units at the Mission, the successful candidate will provide
support for activities relating to communications, advocacy and media for the mission.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

External Communication:

Lead on the design, implementation and monitoring of the communications and
advocacy initiatives for IOM Zambia. This will include:

1. Promoting of visibility and branding of IOM;
2. Facilitating the roll-out of Social Behavioural Change Communication (SBCC) interventions;
3. Supporting IOM to implement effective community mobilization and engagement interventions;
4. Supporting the IOM programme teams in preparing and packaging various communication, advocacy, and visibility materials in line IOM guidelines;
5. Ensuring effective documentation of results and good practices under IOM’s mandate through Human Interest Stories, video and photo documentaries;
6. Contribute to the implementation of the overall IOM Zambia Communications Strategy (2023 – 2026) in collaboration with the Communications committee.

This will include:

  • Enhancing IOM Zambia’s digital presence, ensuring that corporate social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube) are a dynamic, attractive,  and interactive platforms to attract, broaden, and engage audiences;
  • Supporting the visibility on IOM’s work to external audiences, as well as maintaining close collaboration with media;
  • Contributing to the drafting and editing of articles, press releases, humaninterest stories, quarterly newsletters, and other advocacy/information materials;
  • Supporting the coverage of IOM events, including field visits by donors, media, and senior Government officials.

Internal Communication:

7. Contribute to the maintenance of an up-to-date documentation centre for publications, press releases and news clippings, as well as photographic and audio-visual materials;
8. Support respective programme teams to prepare briefing notes, talking points and speeches for the Chief of Mission and other IOM senior personnel;
9. Track IOM mentions in the media and report on trends;
10. Perform any other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in mass communication, Journalism or Development Studies

Experience

  • At least 2 years of professional work experience;
  • Strong interest in working in the UN system;
  • Excellent knowledge of English with fluency in speaking, reading and writing.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and a strong team working capacity

Languages

  • Fluency in English (oral and written) and working knowledge of local languages spoken in the duty station. French and Swahili will be an added advantage.
