Position reports to: Specialist, Taxation
Grade: G 12
Purpose
To contribute towards reduced exposure on tax liabilities through compliance to tax regulations/ laws and customs management.
Key Responsibilities
This position will be required to adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures and legal regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the function.
Ensure all imports and exports comply with national customs regulations and international trade laws.
Prepare, review, and validate customs declarations, invoices, packing lists, and other shipping documents.
Maintain accurate records of all customs-related transactions for audits and reporting.
Classify goods under the correct HS Codes for duty and tax assessment.
Ensure correct customs valuation methods are applied to determine duties and VAT.
Calculate and verify customs duties, excise, and VAT payable on consignments.
Identify exemptions, rebates, and preferential trade agreements (e.g., SADC, COMESA, AfCFTA) to reduce costs.
Resolve customs queries and disputes quickly to avoid penalties or shipment delays.
Monitor compliance risks in customs processes and recommend corrective measures.
Prepare for internal, external audits and ZRA audits by maintaining transparent customs records.
Keep track of changing customs laws, tariff schedules, and trade agreements.
Advise management on cost-saving opportunities, import/export restrictions, and new compliance requirements.
Support supply chain/logistics teams by ensuring smooth clearance of shipments.
Track shipments to minimize demurrage, detention, and other avoidable costs.
Advise procurement, finance, and logistics teams on customs implications before finalizing contracts.
Ensure that customs related payments are timely initiated
Provide adequate supervision to interns in the Department
Participate in inhouse tax capacity building, education and workshops on customs procedures and compliance requirements.
Act as a direct link between the company, customs authorities, freight forwarders, and clearing agents.
Any other duties lawfully assigned
Perform any other task as directed by immediate Supervisor or lawfully assigned
Qualifications
Full Grade 12 certificate
Diploma in accounting, Business administration or Taxation
Part two of a Professional course (ACCA,ZICA /CIMA) etc.
Member of ZICA
Experience
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar industry / environment working in accounting, customs or taxation at a reputable organization, covering the areas of:
