JOB OPPORTUNITY: ASSISTANT LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Luapula Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited (LpWSC) are a Commercial Water Utility Company, which was incorporated under the Companies Act (Cap 388 of the Laws of Zambia) as a limited liability company (by shares) in December 2008. LpWSC was specifically established to provide water supply and sanitation services to all the people in all the Areas of Luapula Province (Urban and Rural areas). Operations of the Company begun in 2009 and the Company is currently operating in Six (6) out of the Twelve (12) districts of the province, namely: Mansa, Samfya, Kawambwa, Mwense, Nchelenge and Chienge districts.

LpWSC now seeks to recruit a high profile, self-motivated, innovative, honest, committed, adequately and appropriately experienced, dynamic, and skilled person to fill the following vacant position:

POSITION:   ASSISTANT LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST (JOB GRADE LWS 6)

JOB PURPOSE:

Reporting to the Laboratory Technologist, the position is responsible for collecting, testing, monitoring, analyzing water and reporting data on water, waste and sanitation, using a variety of techniques and methodologies, to assure attainment of quality and safety standards

KEY RESULTS AREAS AND MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.    Collecting, preparing and testing samples for chemical and microbial parameters

2.    Assessing the Quality of drinking water, analyzing and interpreting statistical data

3.    Reporting on water quality and pollution issues and take proactive remedial action

4.    Responsible for equipment operation, calibration, cleaning, and maintenance.

5.    Ensure that required quality control protocols are computed and adhered to.

6.    Responding to emergencies when water or waste water quality is compromised

7.    Review data and request additional testing or rechecks, as needed.

8.    Liaising with regulatory bodies and customers on water quality and safety issues

9.    Publicizing advice on avoiding issues on non-compliance with legislation

10.  Accurately enter all required data into logbooks, and other reporting systems

11.  Performs any other duties as delegated by superiors.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

1.    School Certificate with 5 ‘O’ Levels, with a Credit or Better in English and Mathematics

2.    Diploma in Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Microbiology or similar science disciplines. A Bachelor of Science (BSc) in any of these disciplines will be an added advantage.

3.    Experience: One (1+) years’ work experience in a similar role.

4.    Age Limits: Not more than 35 years old

5.    Valid Membership to a relevant Professional Body is a Requirement

6.    Clean Driver’s License or Motorbike Rider’s License will be an added advantage

OTHER COMPETENCIES / SKILLS / ATTRIBUTES:

1.    Proficiency in handling and maintaining laboratory equipment such as microscopes, autoclaves, incubators, chemical analyzers, cell counters, etcetera.

2.    Ability to analyze biological samples and chemical samples accurately.

3.    Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures while conducting laboratory tests.

4.    Ability to assess the accuracy, validity, and integrity of data generated during testing.

5.    Excellent communication skills to convey the findings and document results.

6.    Meticulousness in observing, monitoring, collecting, and recording data.

7.    Attention to detail and highly developed ICT skills

8.    Excellence recordkeeping capabilities and effective task management

9.    Willingness to actively pursue continuing professional development

10.  Interpersonal skills for liaising with customers, regulatory and health bodies and others
