Job Title: Technician – Research and Development
Department: Research and Development
Location: Lusaka/Mkushi

Position Summary:

The Technician-Research & Development will be responsible for the implementation of all breeding nurseries and trials. The incumbent will additionally be in charge of the coordination of on-farm and on-station variety trials. The role involves a lot of data collection and recording. The technician plays a big role ensuring the success of the breeding pipelines and overall efficiency of the breeding function.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Crop Planning and Management:

  • Lead the implementation of a breeding nurseries and trials at all research sites
  • Manage and supervise on-station and on-farm trials
  • Develop comprehensive crop plans considering planting schedules, fertilization, irrigation, and pest control.
  • Implement best agronomic practices to optimize crop growth, maximize yield, and maintain seed quality.

2. Field Operations:

  • Oversee all aspects of field operations, including planting, cultivation, irrigation, and harvesting of trials and nurseries
  • Implement pest and disease control measures, ensuring the health and vitality of seed crops
  • Manage all the controlled pollinations of all nurseries

3. Quality Assurance:

  • Enforce and monitor adherence to quality assurance protocols throughout the seed production process.
  • Conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with quality standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in field trials to evaluate the performance of newly developed varieties.

4. Supplier and Farmer Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with input suppliers and contracted farmers to ensure a timely and high-quality supply of breeders’ seed.
  • Provide training and support to farmers on best agronomic practices for seed production.

5. Data Collection and Analysis:

  • Collect, record, and analyze data related to crop performance, yield, and seed quality.
  •  Utilize statistical tools to derive insights and contribute to continuous improvement in plant breeding and seed production practices.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Agriculture, or related field. A Masters degree is an added advantage
  • Proven experience in seed production, research and agronomic management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Ability to work long hours and weekends during peak periods
