Job Description


1. Drill & Blast Engineer

Role Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Mine Manager, you will be responsible for Drill and Blast Engineering support to the mining operations. Your duties will include but not limited to the following:

Job Responsibilities

  • Optimise drill fleet schedules, work programs, targets and requirements within their limitations and ability
  • Provide and update reports on actual drilled meters, consumption of consumables, etc.
  • Produce post blast analysis reports
  • Provide and document tie up plans to Drill and Blast operations
  • Monitor explosive usage, fragmentation and powder factors
  • Act as liaison to the explosive supplier for all technical matters
  • Promote and lead business improvement projects involving drilling and blasting
  • Ensure that environmental policies and strategies are incorporated into Drill and Blast plans
  • Spearhead manpower development and training needs
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Assistant Mine Manager

Experience & Qualifications

  • Degree in Mining Engineering
  • Member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in mining engineering role
  • Must have experience in large open pit operations utilizing large scale mining equipment i.e. drill rigs and blasting experience essential
  • Prior exposure to Mine Planning, Design, Production/Drill and blast engineering will be an added advantage
  • Must show a commitment to impart technical knowledge to the mine operations personnel
  • Competent in incident/accident investigation
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to deliver results and act as a change agent
  • MUST be a holder of both a Zambian Blasting Licence and a manual Driver`s Licence

2. Load & Haul Engineer

Role Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Mine Manager, you will be responsible for Load & Haul mining operations. Your duties will include but not limited to the following:

Job Responsibilities

  • Analyse and measure mining processes to identify improvement opportunities
  • Manage loading and hauling operations to achieve budgeted plans and schedule compliance metrics
  • Optimise excavator and truck usage to achieve hauling targets
  • Carry out payload capacity analysis for hauling and loading when this is not achieved
  • Optimise load & haul fleet, monitor efficiencies, track KPIs.
  • Monitor performance data across the section to improve individual supervisor and crew performance
  • Provide and update material mined out reports on actual tonnages
  • Conduct root-cause analyses on faulty or defective systems, identify and implement suitable solutions.
  • Liaise with maintenance engineering, track reported defects and ensure they are attended to and signed off
  • Establish a performance culture, characterised by continuous improvement
  • Promote and lead business improvement projects involving load and haul section
  • Identify operations improvement opportunities
  • Ensure that environmental policies and strategies are incorporated into load and haul plans.
  • Keep environmental impact within statutory requirements
  • Spearhead manpower development and training needs
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Assistant Mine Manager

Experience & Qualifications

  • Degree in Mining Engineering
  • Member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in mining engineering with bias towards load and haul
  • Must have experience in large open pit operations utilizing large scale mining equipment i.e. prior load and haul experience essential
  • Prior exposure to Mine Planning, Design, Production/Operations specializing in loading and hauling will be an added advantage
  • Must show a commitment to impart technical knowledge to the mine operations personnel
  • Competent in incident/accident investigation
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to deliver results and act as a change agent
  • MUST be a holder of both a Zambian Blasting License and a manual Driver`s License

3. Shift Boss – Load & Haul

Role Summary

Reporting to the Load and Haul Engineer, you will be responsible for supervising the Load & Haul shift in mining operations. Your duties will include but not limited to the following:

Job Responsibilities

  • To be appointed under Mining Regulation (MR) 213 and record entries of the Log Book appropriately
  • Responsible for micro-managing load and haul operations in a shift assigned to you
  • Monitor cycle times as the shift progresses and take appropriate action/decision to improve efficiency
  • Continuously identify operational bottlenecks and take appropriate action in a timely manner
  • Conduct PEP talks with men and women in your shift and understand their state of mind before assigning them machines
  • Signing off of machine checklists before operators use machines and report defects through the established communication channel
  • Responsible for maintaining waste dumps
  • Carry out operations in such a way so as to meet shift mining targets
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Load and Haul Engineer.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Degree or Diploma in Mining Engineering from a reputable University
  • Member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in mining engineering with bias towards load and haul or in operations
  • Must have experience in large open pit operations utilizing large scale mining equipment i.e. prior load and haul experience essential
  • Must show a commitment to learn and adapt to open pit mine operations
  • Able to compile and initial incident report
  • Must have excellent written and interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to deliver results and provide leadership to personnel
  • MUST be a holder of both a Zambian Blasting License and a manual Driver`s License

4. Mine Planning Engineer

Role Summary

Reporting to the Mine Manager/Assistant Mine Manager, you will be responsible for managing the mine planning processes and to develop effective methods to meet the mine’s business plan. Your duties will include but not limited to the following:

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead a team through different planning levels taking into consideration the input parameters (technology, markets, mineral resources and legal framework) to align business strategy with business performance
  • Develop and ensure the mine plan follows logical, cost effective and practical mining sequences particularly wet and dry season mining strategies requirements to sustain production
  • Develop a monthly, quarterly and yearly budget and monitor its performance by way of scheduled timely reviews
  • Interpret production requirements to come up with a development and production plan to ensure the effective utilisation of resources and the attainment of production targets
  • Coming up with monthly and daily breakdown of production and development plans
  • Prepare and track progress of monthly plan vs actual (cost implications and performance), forecast revision of plan and ensure that planning reporting is aligned with industry best practices, guidelines and schedules
  • Prepare development of bench extraction plans and track the performance of the mine plans against actual plan performance
  • Under the guidance of the department head develop pit, dump and other infrastructure designs which are appropriate to suit the needs of the mine planning
  • Assist in the development of standard operating procedures
  • Ensure the Environmental policies and strategies are incorporated into mining plans
  • Provide support to other mine planning disciplines when required
  • Promote a culture of safety and productivity

Experience & Qualifications

  • Degree in Mining Engineering
  • Member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in mine planning and related roles
  • Experience in planning large open pit mines
  • Experience in Mine Planning, Design and Production Engineering
  • Experience in Surpac is a must have
  • Experience in using scheduling software including but not limited to Mine Shed
  • Competent with Microsoft office suite of products
  • Ability to present to senior management with good written and oral skills in English
  • Displays initiative and teamwork skills
  • Physically fit and able to pass pre-employment medical
  • MUST be a holder of both a Zambian Blasting License and a manual Driver`s License
