HEALTH & SAFETY OFFICER-OPEN PIT

DESCRIPTION

TITLE:  HEALTH & SAFETY OFFICER-PIT

REPORTING TO:  SHEQ MANAGER

STATION:  GRIZZLY MINE SITE

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct regular safety inspections in and around the pit to ensure compliance to health and safety procedures and guidelines.
  • Assist to identify hazards, near misses and ensure site presence.
  • Ensure all mobile equipment have appropriate fire-fighting equipment at all times.
  • Ensure blasting and other health and safety procedures are adhered to all the time.
  • Conduct incident/accident investigations and make sure all incidents/accidents, including near misses are fully investigated and closed-out.
  • Provide safety & health coaching to employees and supervisors to enhance their awareness.
  • Work closely with departmental Supervisors to timely close corrective actions. Review the effectiveness of the corrective actions and provide feedback accordingly.
  • Conduct, inductions, risk assessment, fire-fighting and other related safety training.
  • Ensure there is readable signage in the pit.
  • Ensure all first aid equipment are inspected at least once every week.
  • Ensure weekly toolbox talks are prepared and distributed to all sections in the pit and followed up to ensure compliance by all.
  • Ensure there is proper housekeeping and high levels of industrial hygiene in the pit.
  • Any other as assigned by the superior.

MINIMAL COMPETENCIES REQUIRED FOR THE JOB
Professional and/or technical competencies:

  • Degree/Diploma in Health & Safety Management, Engineering or related fields.
  • Minimum of five (5) years working experience in a mining environment (preferably open pits).
  • Lead Auditor training based on OHSAS 18001.
  • Basic Supervisory training skills.
  • Valid mining First Aid certificate.
  • Computer literacy and excellent report writing.
  • Clean driving licence-minmum class

Behavioural and/or managerial competencies:

  • Able to develop safety related training packages and deliver them effectively
  • Able to prepare Safety & health reports and statistical data to reflect health and safety performance.
  • Ability to work under extreme pressure.
  • Be self-motivated, dynamic and a self-starter.
  • Should be able to show initiative.
  • Ability to strive to achieve high quality results with a persistently positive outlook in the face of challenges.
  • Should be of unquestionable integrity
