Misenge Environmental and Technical Services Ltd (METS) is a consulting firm providing Environmental Consultancy, Analytical Services, Radiation Safety Services and Engineering Services to clients in Zambia and the region. METS is a 100% owned subsidiary Company of ZCCM-Investments Holdings Plc

Job Summary 

The Radiation Protection Officer will be responsible for conducting Radiological Surveys and Assessments for METS and its clients to ensure that the public, workers and the environment are protected from the dangers of ionizing radiation in compliance with local and international regulations and best practices. The position reports to Environment and Radiation Safety Specialist.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular checks/surveys and inspections for radiation storage sites for ZCCM-IH, that is, the Uranium Tailings Engineered Disposal Cell (UTEDC) and the Radiation Waste Storage Building (RWSB)
  • Conduct radiological surveys and trainings in radiation safety in accordance with local and international guidelines
  • Conduct leak tests, radon monitoring, sealed source conditioning, radiation safety awareness training
  • Compile monthly and quarterly radiation section operations reports and other status reports
  • Develop and review procedures, provide technical expertise and perform a variety of activities relating to environmental management and radiation safety in accordance with local and international guidelines
  • Develop and implement radiation safety procedures and local rules for the Radiation Waste Storage Building (RWSB)
  • Dialogue with clients, regulators, contractors and subcontractors on management of radiation issues as directed
  • Prepare and maintain reports, records and documentation on field inspection, radioactive waste inventories and statutory compliance (permits and licenses)
  • Prepare Terms of Reference for engagement of individual consultants to be subcontracted by METS
  • Prepare competitive Technical and Financial proposals in response to request for tenders from potential clients
  • Keep informed of current and proposed radiation protection Acts, regulations and policies
  • Ensure that equipment used in radiation protection and safety related activities are maintained in good working condition (calibrated, cleaned etc)
  • Initiate orders and maintain supplies, tools and materials needed to provide required environmental and radiation safety services
  • Ensure maximum protection of workforce, visitors and the environment.

Education and experience

  • Full Grade 12 Certificate
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in physical or biological science or in any related subject
  • Certification in radiation protection
  • Certification in occupational health and safety is an added advantage
  • At least 3 years post graduate practical experience in Radiation Protection and Safety.

Key knowledge, attributes, skills and abilities

  • Good general knowledge of Ionizing Radiation, its effects and the Zambian Laws governing Ionizing Radiation
  • Must be a self- motivated starter who can effectively and assertively communicate with customers, management, employees both verbally and in writing
  • Good time management and efficient working practices
  • Be adaptable and possess an analytical approach to work
  • Proficient in the use of MS Word, Excel/Google Earth Pro and in the use of email and the internet
  • Clean Driving license

Physical Environmental Risk exposure

Mostly works under office conditions but may also be exposed to elevated levels of radiation, fumes, dust and other environmental hazards during site inspections and surveys in the field.
