About the role:
The Quantity Surveyor (QS) is responsible for managing project costs, contractor payments, and budget control for the 84-unit housing development in Kalumbila. The role involves preparing bills of quantities (BoQs), monitoring expenditures, assessing variations, and ensuring cost-effective procurement of materials and services. The QS will work closely with the Project Manager and
Procurement Lead to maintain financial oversight of the project.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Cost Management and  Budgeting

  • Prepare and update project cost estimates and budgets.
  • Monitor expenditures to ensure alignment with approved budgets.
  • Identify potential cost overruns and propose mitigation strategies.

2. Contractor and Payment Management

  • Prepare and review contractor work valuations and certify payments.
  • Ensure all contractor claims and invoices are accurate and within contract terms.
  • Assess variations and negotiate cost adjustments where necessary.

3. Bills of Quantities (BoQs) and Cost Control

  • Develop and maintain detailed BoQs for all construction activities.
  • Conduct material take-offs and verify quantities for procurement.
  • Track material usage and prevent unnecessary wastage.

4. Procurement Coordination

  • Work closely with the Procurement Lead to ensure cost-effective material sourcing.
  • Verify supplier invoices and ensure payments align with actual deliveries.
  • Assist in contract negotiations with vendors and subcontractors.

5. Reporting and Compliance

  • Provide regular cost reports to the Project Manager and executive team.
  • Maintain proper documentation of financial transactions and procurement records.
  • Ensure compliance with contractual and financial regulations.

Desired Skills and Experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in quantity surveying for construction projects.
  • Strong understanding of Copperbelt / NWP construction cost structures and procurement processes.

Skills and Competencies

  • Proficiency in cost estimation and BoQ preparation.
  • Strong knowledge of suppliers, building materials, and costs in the context of CB / NWP
  • Strong negotiation and contract administration skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills.

Compensation:

  • Performance-Based Incentives: Completion bonuses based on project meeting budget and timeline targets.
  • Housing Allowance: Provided for the duration of the project in Kalumbila.
  • Transport and Site Allowances: Covered for work-related travel.
  • Contract Type: Fixed-term contract for the duration of the construction project (with potential for renewal based on performance and future projects).
