Operations and Maintenance Engineer
This role will monitor the performance of solar power plants on a day-to-day basis and to monitor the O&M Contractors’ execution of daily, weekly and monthly activities. Furthermore, the role will perform analyses and provide information to help ensure that the portfolio of solar assets is operated in a sustainable and optimized manner in line with all internal and external requirements. The job holder will be reporting to the Assets Manager.
Key Accountabilities
- Monitor the performance of each solar plant, with proactive early detection & resolution of issues to support achievement of Operational & Production performance targets.
- Monitor activities related to the inspection, maintenance and repair of the solar assets undertaken by O&M contractors to maintain or restore reliable functionality.
- Communicate effectively with O&M contractors and actively participate in review meetings to provide technical feedback of field operations, and to inform continuous improvement initiatives.
- To monitor compliance of all operations and maintenance activities performed at Solar assets with OEM (original equipment manufacturer) requirements and warranties.
- To undertake independent troubleshooting and fault-diagnosis on a range of solar plant equipment and substation equipment, when necessary.
- Operate a variety of testing, calibration, and repair equipment such as DC and AC testing, polarity, open circuit voltage grounding continuity, insulation resistance testing and I-V Curve tracing.
- Provide timely written review reports from field operations, status, and constructive feedback to supervisor as requested.
- Monitor and enforce proper record keeping by O&M contractor for all detailed maintenance schedules, and reports on all faults, deficiencies, and other unusual occurrences.
- Contribute to budgetary control by ensuring that spend on activities is within prescribed budget(s) and supports opportunities for improved cost efficiencies.
- Carry out all work tasks and assignments in line with the applicable HSES policies and standards.
To be considered for this role, you will be required to have:
- Engineering degree (Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or equivalent) from a reputable institution;
- Power systems/Project management qualification would be highly considered; and
- Registered Member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ).
Specific Technical and Behavioral Competencies
- 3 years of experience, preferably in Solar PV power plants and projects.
- Advanced knowledge of PV power generating system fundamentals.
- Must be familiar with at least one of the specified solar energy forecasting tools, namely: PVsyst, PV Watts, SAM, Retscreen or HOMER.
- Proficiency in MS Office and computerised maintenance systems.
- Proven ability to read electrical drawings.
- Working knowledge of project management practices.
- Must be familiar with project design software e.g., AutoCAD, MS Projects.
- Awareness of the Electricity Grid Code & standard design/construction practices.
- Ability to travel to solar farm sites and work on-call during off-shift hours.
