Background of Media Associations for Self-Regulation (MASR)

Media Associations for Self-Regulation (MASR) is a not-for-profit organization that promotes media self-regulation and upholds the principles of free and fair journalism. MASR was founded in response to the need for independent oversight of media content and ethical practices, and to provide a platform for stakeholders to collaborate and address common challenges.
MASR works closely with media organizations, journalists, regulators, policymakers, and other stakeholders to promote responsible and ethical journalism, uphold the freedom of the press, and ensure that media content is accurate, balanced, and unbiased. Through its various programs and initiatives, MASR provides a forum for stakeholders to discuss and address issues related to media regulation, ethics, and standards.

MASR also serves as a resource for media organizations and journalists, providing guidance and support on ethical issues and best practices in journalism. As part of its commitment to promoting transparency and accountability, MASR has established an independent ombudsman office to investigate complaints related to media content and provide an impartial resolution in collaboration with the MASR Ethics Committee.

About the position

Media Associations for Self-Regulation (MASR) is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Ombudsman to join our team on a 3-year contract basis. As the Ombudsman, you will be responsible for overseeing and resolving complaints related to media content, ensuring compliance with ethical standards, and upholding the principles of free and fair journalism.

Responsibilities:

I. Review and investigate complaints related to media content and provide an impartial resolution in a timely and efficient manner.
II. Collaborate with media organizations, journalists, and other stakeholders to promote ethical practices and standards in the media industry.
III. Conduct research and analysis on emerging issues in media regulation and provide recommendations for improvement.
IV. Develop and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders and partners in the media industry.
V. Maintain accurate records and prepare reports on the activities and outcomes of the Ombudsman office.

Qualifications;

I. A Degree in Journalism, Law, Communications or a related field.
II. A Master’s Degree will be an added advantage.
III. At least 10 years of experience in journalism, media regulation, or a related field.
IV. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for detail.
V. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders and partners.
VI. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
VII. Knowledge of media law and regulations, as well as ethical standards in journalism.
