Job Description
Lumwana Mining Company seeks to recruit a highly committed employee for the position of Mine Hydrologist to join the versatile Mineral Resource Management team.
Reporting to the Hydrogeology Coordinator, you will be responsible for management of dewatering boreholes, piezometers, and other hydrological infrastructure on the mine. He / she is also responsible for collection of Hydrological monitoring data. Your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
Work closely with Barrick engineers and consultants to improve the understanding and management of groundwater and surface water at Lumwana Mine.
Collect hydrological and hydrogeological data, including monitoring groundwater levels, mapping open pit seepage, measuring surface water flows, and performing groundwater hydraulic testing.
Analyse and interpret geological, hydrological, and hydrogeological data to support mine water management planning.
Develop and maintain conceptual and numerical groundwater models of the mine’s open pits.
Provide hydrological input for design of pit dewatering infrastructure including expected groundwater inflows and rainfall runoff.
Maintain the current equipment and instrumentation inventory including, vibrating wire piezometers, Data loggers, dip meters etc.
Provide appropriate advice and design analysis for all hydrological and hydrogeological issues related to the open pits, waste rock dumps, stockpiles, sumps, haul roads and drainage channels
Ensure that hydrological and hydrogeological advice and design recommendations provided in relation to the open pits, dumps, stockpiles, sumps, haul roads and drainage channels is understood and executed correctly in the field.
Design and manage the pit slope pore pressure monitoring program and slope depressurisation works.
Design and manage the pit dewatering bore hole drilling and installation programs
Supervise hydrogeology projects including piezometer installations, dewatering boreholes etc
Design and manage the Surface water management infrastructure (Dams, Embankments, drainages, and silt ponds).
Develop, implement, and maintain safe work procedures and promote high safety and health awareness. Promote and comply with the LMC Occupational Health & Safety Policy.
Be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the team.
Ensure appropriate facilities, procedures, and workforce competence to achieve legal compliance, incident prevention and the achievement of tasks in an environmentally sustainable manner.
Maintain and develop relationships with stakeholders in LMC’s mining activities, consistent with Barrick’s Community Relations Policies.
Become actively involved in Barrick’s aims and objectives of engaging with the local community and strive to leave a positive impact on the longer-term outcomes for local people. Promote the integration between this engagement and the success of the business.
Prepare and manage the budget for the function.
Ensure the development and maintenance of up-to-date job procedures for all tasks performed within the function.
Develop objectives for sharing common infrastructure and support services across Barrick and cascade this throughout function.
Ensure effective communication with delegate prior to departure from site.
Be visible in the workplace.
To be considered for the position, you must meet the following requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in hydrogeology, Engineering geology, or geology preferable
Member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia
Minimum 2-3 years’ experience in hydrogeology, water engineering or mine water management
Able to clearly demonstrate the aptitude to drive a light vehicle and hold a current Zambian drivers licence or be able to obtain one.
Be physically fit and be able to pass a pre-employment medical examination.
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills in English and show a commitment to understand local culture and impart your mining operations and technical knowledge to the local Zambian mine operations personnel.
Competent in incident/accident investigation
Commitment to training of Zambian national citizens
