Job Description


Purpose of Job:

To ensure that the KATC Livestock Production units are properly and profitably managed. To carry out general management of livestock and maximize dairy production.

Responsibilities:

Ensure profitable operation of the Livestock production units
Ensuring that proper up to date management practices are adhered to for all livestock operations on the ground
Ensure quality control for all livestock products
Ensure effective supervision of breeding, re-stocking, feed formulation, feeding, dipping, vaccinations, milking, confining animals in respective structures etc.
Ensure proper paddock/parlor clearing/cleaning to maintain standards of hygiene which meet standard requirements
Ensure the establishment and implementation of a longterm feeding plan
Ensure good pasture management, establish grazing plans and oversee it’s implementation
Ensure that up to date records of all livestock activities are kept at all times
Ensure timely and proper animal husbandry and health practices
Ensure proper and consistent costing of all livestock enterprises, including profitability assessment
Ensure farm security
Ensure proper use and maintenance of farm equipment

Duties:

Marking the farm worker’s register
Record keeping
Inspecting herd for diseases
Feeding animals
Dipping animals
Mixing dip chemical in dip tank
Feed formulation
Treating sick animals
Develop and document proper animal production and health practices and guidelines
Develop and document quality control guidelines
Ensure quality control guidelines can be accessed by all employees
Develop and document guidelines for proper paddock/parlor clearing/cleaning to maintain standards of hygiene which meet standard requirements
Supervise and control all livestock activities
Monitor quality control activities
Design forms to capture up to date records of all livestock activities and ensure their effective use
Monitor and keep records of all livestock related trials
Monitor costing of all livestock enterprises, including profitability assessment
Produce reports on livestock activities
Facilitate in SSF training courses
Participate in extension service provision
Receive visitors and provide guided tours
Facilitating local verification trials
Promote small livestock enterprises among small scale farmers
Promote indigenous knowledge
Pay Classified Daily Employees working on livestock

Qualifications/experience/requirements:

At least a Certificate in Agriculture preferably animal health and production or equivalent
At least two years experience in Dairy
At least two years in a supervisory position, managing people (people management skills)
Honest, faithful, reliable and an active team player
Able to work well with minimum supervision
Motivated
Self starter
Willing to work outdoors.
Good facilitation skills
Business orientation/skills
