Hatchery Manager

Yalelo Ltd seeks to hire an experienced and qualified Hatchery Manager who will be responsible for overseeing the sustainable expansion of a cutting-edge hatchery operation, unparalleled amongst peer organizations in the sector. This position is a key role at our Production site and the right -fit candidate will lead a diverse, multi-disciplinary team towards achieving exacting targets for fish production.

The role will be primarily based in Siavonga, Zambia.

The Right Fit candidate will:

  • Build and motivate a high-performance team.
  • Grow the production of fingerlings using high-density production techniques – closely monitoring, tracking, and fine-tuning fish life cycle and growth rates.
  • Oversee hatchery operations including fish care and transfers, breeding, feeding, pond maintenance and stewardship of other hatchery equipment.
  • Develop production plans, budgets, and timelines according to production specifications, monitoring monthly and yearly key performance indicators.
  • Maintain oversight and linkages to planning projects (CapEx and OpEx).
  • Coordinate hatchery operations with other departments to ensure smooth running of production activies.
  • Ensure vital sign checks and communication of production performance to key stake holders.
  • Perform analysis of data through inter-linked production systems to track production plans and draw performance insights
  • Ensure high standards of sanitation and cleanliness essential to the effective control of risk factors under intensive culture operations.
  • Develop and implement management plans to reduce the risks from pests, predators, and diseases with emphasis on disease prevention measures, throughout the hatchery facility.

The Hatchery Manager Must Have:

  • The people management skills to successfully manage a large team
  • Good coaching and knowledge transfer skills
  • An efficiency focused mindset
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Very sound understanding of water quality management in a pond-based system
  • Strong filter – able to work under pressure.
  • Comfortable working on a farm and working unsocial hours.

Qualifications Requirements for the Hatchery Manager are:

  • Bachelor’s/advanced degree in Aquaculture or related field.
  • Five (5) years managerial experience in a similar role.
  • Advanced Excel and data management skills
  • Experience working with Aqua Manager will provide an added advantage
