Job Description
The LUSAKA APEX MEDICAL UNIVERSITY (LAMU) is a privately owned University, registered with the Higher Education Authority to provide Medical related programmes. LAMU is regulated by the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ), Nurses and Midwives Council of Zambia (NMCZ), Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA). Lusaka Apex Medical University is looking for a mature, proactive, and highly motivated and result oriented Zambian with high degree of credibility to fill the following position:
1. GENERAL MEDICAL OFFICER –
Provides leadership, in the provision of Medical care and health promotion services to ensure that the Public enjoy good health.
RESPONSIBILITIES/ DUTIES
- Prepares the Departmental budget and annual work plan with input from subordinates.
- Superintends over the planning of medical care and health promotion programmes aimed at having a healthy, University community.
- Apprises University Management on medical and health matters in order to enable the University provide the required intervention or support in a timely manner.
- Participates in the formulation of Medical care and Health promotion policies to ensure that the health concerns of the staff, students and other stakeholders are catered for in an efficient and cost effective manner.
- Determines and orders the procurement of drugs, equipment, medical linen and other medical accessories.
- Controls the operational costs of the University Medical Clinic/centre by ensuring proper accountability of the drugs, unnecessary overtime claims, and restricting access to authorized patients.
- Controls the operation of the Clinic to ensure that all the medical and health procedures are in line with relevant laws, regulations and professional standards.
- Makes diagnosis, carrying out relevant investigations eg blood glucose test, Malaria test urine/stool analysis and HIV test, thereafter determines and prescribes appropriate treatment. Undertakes minor surgical operations and suturing of wounds.
- Examines and refers all serious cases and emergencies in absence of Superior to a referral Hospital for which the clinic is not equipped to handle or treat or diagnose due to lack of appropriate testing equipment and diagnostic tools e.g. cancer or any other severe conditions.
- Manages and monitors patients on long treatment, arranging for reviews and prescribing appropriate medication befitting the condition and nature of illness until treatment is completed (i.e. TB).
- Treats and manages HIV/AIDS patients by counseling them and prescribing appropriate ARVs and drugs, treating opportunistic infections and illnesses.
- Gives medical treatment including psychotherapy, counseling and general advice to patients to achieve health care satisfaction in consultation with senior consultants.
- Ensures that accurate and up-to-date patient records are maintained for members of staff, students and members of the public.
- Organizes, coordinates and supervises occasional health checks among the University community members of the public including students to ascertain the prevalence of common diseases.
- Develops and implements establishment and maintenance of workplace HIV/AIDS programmes and coordinates Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) sessions.
- Liaises with fellow medical practitioners within and outside LAMU for the purpose of being abreast with the latest developments in the Medical health care field and benchmark the operation of the clinic with the best comparable institution in the market.
- Prepares and submits periodic reports Monthly, Quarterly and Annual Reports) on the performance of the Clinic and specific health care issues in the University, highlighting activities, statistics, problems encountered and recommendations for information and Management decision.
- Performs other relevant duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
- Degree in Medicine (MB,ChB)
- A minimum of 5 years working as general medical officer experience in a busy hospital.
- Valid practicing License.
