TNC in Zambia is rapidly scaling up its terrestrial conservation work in the GKE landscape and is now embarking on an ambitious initiative to integrate freshwater protection and the sustainable utilization of aquatic resources into its work. To achieve this, TNC has launched the Kafue Sustainable Fisheries Programme, which focuses on supporting fishing communities, Government and conservation partners to develop community-based fisheries in six target fisheries across the GKE. The key pillars of the programme are: 1. Promoting sound fisheries governance by facilitating co-management/community-based approaches to fisheries management; 2. Knowledge generation to ensure a rigorous science-based approach to management; 3. Development of fisheries action plans that describe the fisheries’ biophysical context and using the collected baseline socio-ecological information and outline key requirements for developing sustainable fisheries management initiatives in these fisheries.

The Fisheries Coordinator manages and coordinates the day-to-day activities of  TNC’s Kafue Sustainable Fisheries Programme in the GKE. The Fisheries Coordinator will serve as the principal point of contact for local stakeholders involved in the programme and will collaborate closely with key stakeholders such as the Department of Fisheries, Greater Kafue Landscape Limited and fishing communities, serving as an interface between all fisheries stakeholders. The Fisheries Coordinator will work closely with government agencies to provide technical support to fishing communities, coordinate field activities including the establishment and implementation of community-based fisheries monitoring initiatives, coordinate fisheries co-management activities and ensure that key fisheries stakeholders are consistently engaged and aware of fisheries-related activities and supportive of the programme.
