THE ORGANIZATION

The Zambia Academy of Sciences (ZaAS) is a statutory Body which was established under Act No. 18 of 2020 to provide for the promotion of technological discovery and innovation: of matters of public interest relating to science and technology: promotion of research and its utilisation in the development of science and technology: provision of independent advice in the development, promotion and utilisation of science, technology, engineering and mathematics: and recognition and honouring of distinguished scholars such as scientists, mathematicians, engineers and technologists. The institution has the mandate of providing independent and evidence-based scientific advice or opinion to government, the private sector and the general public.

 

 

POSITION 1: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

1.0 JOB PURPOSE

Under the direction and the control of the Governing Council of the Academy, the Executive Director is in charge of the execution of the mandate entrusted to the Academy under the Zambia Academy of Sciences Act. No. 18 of 2020, and the Zambia Academy of Sciences Constitution.

2.0 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The key responsibilities of the Executive Director are:

  • Provides leadership to the Academy’s secretariat in achieving its mission as defined by the Governing Council
  • Communicates effectively with the Governing Council and provides in a timely and accurate manner, information necessary for the Governing Council to function properly and make informed decisions.
  • Coordinates the provision of independent evidence-based advice to government, its agencies, industry and the general public on matters concerning science, technology and innovation.
  • Ensures the undertaking of relevant research/studies by the Academy in its provision of scientific advice
  • Effectively manages the utilization of human, financial and other resources to facilitate the attainment of the Academy’s mandate.
  • Effectively promotes science, technology and innovation in order to enhance its application.
  • Effectively mobilises financial and other resources in order to attain the
    mandate of the Academy.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with corresponding scientific organizations locally and internationally.

3.0 KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS

The required knowledge and skills of the candidate include:

i. QUALIFICATION

Minimum of a Masters Degree in any science discipline.

ii. EXPERIENCE

a) Minimum of seven (7) years post qualification experience, in a research/development related institution, of which at least 3 years must have been at senior management level.

b) Knowledge of how science academies operate.

c) Proven experience in resource mobilization.

iii. KEY SKILLS

a) Excellent written and oral communication skills

b) Good numerical Analytical and computational skills

c) Strong leadership and management skills

d) Programme initiation, development and implementation skills

e) Good marketing and negotiations skills

 

 

iv. ATTRIBUTES
