General Description:
The Driver operates Peace Corps motor vehicles in accordance with instructions to transport Peace Corps or associated agency personnel and official visitors. Maintains vehicle in clean and serviceable condition and performs minor maintenance of a preventative nature
Tasks & Deliverables
- Ensure passenger wears a seat belt when operating a Peace Corps vehicle.
- Perform a check of all Peace Corps vehicles before operating them.
- Prepare vehicles for up-country trips.
- Transport Peace Corps staff or Volunteers to and from various locations as needed.
- Ensure that there is a log sheet in each vehicle and that all trips are logged.
- Follow all procedures related to fuel management and reporting.
- Ensures all vehicles are cleaned and in road worthy condition and the start of each day.
- Inspects all vehicles at the end of each working day and reports any faults or dents
- Safeguards the vehicles, passengers and cargo. Ensures that vehicles are locked at all times, and safely parked/garaged after hours.
- Secures loads on top of the vehicles in a manner that will prevent damage to the vehicles, and to prevent cargo from falling from the roof while vehicles are moving and stopped.
- Ensures that the vehicle is equipped with all necessary emergency accessories such as medical kit, triangles, spare tire and jack, triangles at all times.
- Transports fuel, including cooking gas, only in approved containers, and only on top of vehicles.
- Ensure that h/she reports to DMO/GSM any movement after dark for approval.
- Must always ensure that h/she has a valid driver’s license, medical clearance and SMITH certification to operate the class of vehicles assigned.
- Draws fuel from the Embassy and refuels generators as needed ensuring all Lusaka generators and bowser logs are maintained and current and shared with the Motorpool Coordinator
- Apprise GSO of materials needed for vehicle maintenance and repairs.
- Collect items and documents from vendors and complete deliveries as requested.
- Ensure collection/delivery of mail and parcels to the Embassy and Post Office respectively.
- Pick up parcels from the Post Office for PCVs.
- Assist in the upkeep and repair of vehicles.
- Ensure the servicing of generators as needed and upon request.
- Assist in bicycle maintenance and repairs.
- Other duties as may be assigned including but not limited to serving as Back up Motorpool Coordinator or General Services Clerk upon request.
Required Qualifications:
In order to be selected for this position, the applicant must be legally eligible to work in Zambia, must not have been employed in intelligence-related activities, and must submit an application that clearly documents how they meet each of the following requirements:
- Completion of secondary school.
- Valid local driver’s license Class C category or better.
- Knowledge of local traffic laws and area traffic patterns.
- A minimum of five years professional driving experience for an international agency or a transportation / tour company. Experience must include operating passenger 4x 4 vehicles with manual transmission, both on and off-road.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a medical clearance for driving and SMITH driving certification in accordance with Peace Corps Zambia and U.S. Embassy requirements.
- Good working knowledge of English language.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Vocational training/certification in and certification in mechanics/fleet management/ Transport logistics or related field or apprenticeship recognized as producing journeyman mechanic skills.
- Computer skills including use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Good working knowledge of the commonly (spoken and written) local languages.
