Organization and Program Overview
Mothers Without Borders (MWB) is an international NGO based in Provo, Utah and operating in Zambia, dedicated to protecting the vulnerable and empowering marginalized individuals, families, and communities. For over 20 years, we have provided support to children, youth, and women in the greater Lusaka area.
The Boys Empowerment Program, launched by Mothers Without Borders in 2021, focuses on helping young men complete their education, acquire leadership skills, and lead self-determined lives, becoming compassionate, respectful leaders in their communities. This program places young men in peer support groups with an appointed mentor and provides tuition assistance and school supplies for their secondary and tertiary education. The program emphasizes positive masculinity, challenges harmful gender norms, and aims to empower boys to contribute meaningfully to community development. Currently, the program supports over 90 boys, providing educational assistance, leadership training, mentorship, and resources for long-term success.
The objectives of this program are to:
- Inspire each boy to achieve his dreams, realize his full potential, find his voice, and be a force for good in the world.
- Empower each boy in his physical, emotional, mental, and cultural growth and learning.
- Equip boys with the confidence, leadership skills, and self-reliance needed to set and achieve personal and educational goals.
- Empower boys to challenge harmful gender norms and embrace positive masculinity, becoming compassionate and respectful leaders.
The program’s main components are:
- Educational Support: The program covers tuition costs, providing scholarships and essential school supplies, such as uniforms and bicycles, to remove financial barriers and support boys in successfully completing their education. Vocational training and technical skills development, including computer literacy, are also offered to prepare them for future careers.
- Mentorship and Personal Growth: Each boy is paired with a dedicated mentor who offers guidance on sensitive issues, encourages self-esteem, and nurtures skills and talents. Leadership training, confidence-building activities, and communication workshops are integrated to develop boys into future leaders.
- Health and Wellness: Boys are given access to sexual and reproductive health education, mental health counseling, peer support groups, and regular mentoring sessions to ensure their holistic well-being.
Safe Spaces and Housing: The program offers safe housing solutions for boys in vulnerable situations through foster placements. A sub-center is provided to serve as a safe, community-centered space for the boys to gather and learn with their mentors. - Human Rights and Advocacy: The program promotes gender equality and positive masculinity by challenging harmful societal norms and fostering boys’ understanding of human rights. Workshops and advocacy initiatives encourage boys to become compassionate and inclusive leaders in their communities.
