Misenge Environmental and Technical Services Ltd (METS) is a consulting firm providing Environmental Consultancy, Analytical Services, Radiation Safety Services and Engineering Services to clients in Zambia and the region. METS is a 100% owned subsidiary Company of ZCCM-Investments Holdings Plc

The Company now invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons who are innovative, energetic, and performance-driven to fill the position of Analytical Chemist.

Job Summary: Plan and supervise the day to day operations related to the Mineral Analytical Laboratory to ensure that the testing is completed timely and accurately and support the implementation and maintenance of the Laboratory Quality System and ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Quality Standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Organize and control all aspects of the Analytical Laboratory including ensuring that analysis and reporting is undertaken in accordance with the Laboratory Quality Systems to ensure supply of timely, cost effective data of the required accuracy and precision to clients.
  • Implement, maintain and contribute towards the continuous improvement of the Laboratory’s Quality System by updating and revising the Laboratory’s Quality Assurance Manual, Standard Operating Procedures, and other quality documents as per requirements of ISO/IEC 17025.
  • Perform internal audits of the Laboratory, including both technical and quality systems audits, initiate and document corrective action, including follow-up monitoring to gauge the effectiveness of the corrective action.
  • Ensure all testing is monitored by adequate internal quality control including scheduling and successfully completion within acceptable quality criteria annual proficiency testing for all analyses in METS’s Scope of Accreditation.
  • Accurately report and interpret test results, trends and investigate non-conforming results.
  • Ensure all Quality records, data & information are maintained accurately, up to date and readily accessible as per laboratory quality system requirements.
  • Participate in new instrument, analytical method and test validation/verification and transfer to the agreed timelines.
  • Prepare and submit purchase requests for equipment and laboratory supplies as needed to the provision of uninterrupted service.
  • Promote good customer relations with all METS clients at all times, including promoting METS laboratory services and responding and resolving clients enquiries in a timely and effective manner to ensure consistency of service delivery and agreed contractual obligations.
  • Prepare detailed laboratory reports (including weekly reports, monthly reports and quarterly reports), data sheets, and other documentation in accordance with established reporting schedules and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 17025 testing laboratory accreditation.
  • Promote safe attitudes and work practices by ensuring good housekeeping in lab as well as surrounding area and adherence to safety standards and protocols at all times in regards to safe handling of materials and wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as specified.
  • Provide technical assistance to subordinates, assess their capabilities and provide training where required to achieve expected quality.

Education and experience

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry
  • 5 years experience in laboratory management
  • Good basic laboratory skills related to consistent experiment methodology and safety.
  • Computer literate and fully conversant with the Microsoft Office package.

Key knowledge, attributes, skills and abilities

  • Good knowledge of ISO standards and ISO certification processes.
  • Good time management and efficient working practices.
  • Be adaptable and posses an analytical approach to work.
  • Proficient in the use of MS Word, Excel and in the use of email and the internet.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
