Physical Education Teacher (Swimming)

Simba School is among the first group of the international schools to be established in Zambia spanning over 42 years’ experience in educating children covering Early Years, primary through to Sixth Form, comprising both day and boarding students. We have a co-educational population of over 450.

We are a high performing school that has an entrenched Cambridge Primary Programme and are seeking the services of a highly experienced Physical Education teacher with a strength in Swimming and related ISAZ P.E. curriculum.

Job Purpose

  • To spearhead swimming lessons, plan, develop and deliver high quality P.E. lessons using a variety of approaches, to continually enhance teaching and learning.
  • To monitor student progress in Swimming, keep student records that include assessment outcomes and targets set at regular intervals in line with school policy, to enable all students to achieve their full potential in Swimming and other sports.
  • To maintain and build upon the teacher standards set in the Cambridge curriculum and the school.
  • Contribute to the safeguarding and promotion of the welfare and personal care of children and young people with regard to Child Protection Procedures and enhance the philosophy that every child matters.
  • To be an active member of the P.E. Department in the school by promoting school swimming and carryout any other reasonable tasks requested by the Deputy Head.

Main Duties

Teaching and learning

  • Manage student learning through effective teaching in accordance with the Department’s schemes of work and policies.
  • Demonstrate a proficiency in coaching swimming targeted at beginners, intermediate and regular swimmers.
  • Ensure continuity, progression and cohesiveness in teaching swimming and all ISAZ sports.
  • Innovative and proactive in initiating inter-house competitions, swimming galas and whole school sports programmes.
  • Work with SEN staff and support staff through joint planning to ensure children benefit from their specialist knowledge in the areas of Extra-curricular engagement.
  • Support individual learning, including students on gifted and talented register, by planning work with appropriate challenge and monitoring and reviewing student outcomes regularly.
  • Work effectively as a member of the Primary and Secondary PE teams to improve the quality of teaching and learning of swimming and other sports.
  • Contribute to ‘Academy Improvement Plan’ in targeted sports such as Swimming.
  • Set high expectations for all students to maximise their potential and achievement.
  • Use positive management of behaviour in an environment of mutual respect that allows students to feel safe and secure.

Monitoring, Assessment, Recording, Reporting, and Accountability

  • Be immediately responsible for the processes of identification, assessment, recording and reporting for the students in their charge.
  • Track student progress, monitoring achievement against targets set, and takes appropriate action on student outcomes.
  • Assess students’ work systematically and use the results to inform future planning, teaching and curricular development.
  • Keep an accurate register of students for each lesson.

Extra-Curricular Activities & Events

  • To co-coordinate within the PE department for out of school clubs, activities and teams.
  • To be proactive in engaging with wider community opportunities and events and the organization of sporting fixtures relating to Physical Education, Sport and Healthy living.
  • Subject Knowledge and Understanding
  • Have a thorough and up-to-date knowledge and understanding of the Cambridge Curriculum, level descriptors and specifications for examination courses where appropriate.
  • Knowledge and experience in handling ISAZ sports programmes.
  • Keep up-to-date with research and developments in pedagogy in the subject area.
  • Contribute to the effective use of subject resources, including evaluation of new materials and equipment.
  • Keep up-to-date with technological change and the use of technology to enhance delivery, and student access, to the subject.

Qualifications:

  • Degree with Qualified Teacher Status authenticated by the Teaching Council of Zambia.
  • Minimum of 5 years teaching experience, ISAZ environment is an added advantage.
  • Registered with the Teaching Council of Zambia.
  • Certified to coach a variety of sports.
