Nsumbu Tanganyika Conservation Programme

An opportunity exists within Frankfurt Zoological Society, Zambia through the Nsumbu Tanganyika Conservation Programme (NTCP) for a well-organized, highly motivated and independent person to join the team in Nsumbu as the Workshop and Infrastructure technical advisor to supervise all operational aspects of project activities underway in Nsumbu relating to infrastructure, law enforcement and species reintroductions thus freeing up the Programme Manager to focus on external issues, strategic planning and financials.

Position Title: Workshop and Infrastructure Technical Advisor (WITA)

Location: Nsumbu National Park, Zambia

Reports to: Programme Manager, NTCP

Purpose of the Job

FZS through the NTCP has, and continues to, invest significantly in the protected area management of the wider Nsumbu ecosystem with the aims of restoring wildlife populations and ecosystem functions. This is being achieved through a multi-facetted approach by improving park infrastructure, increasing law enforcement operations, conducting extensive training, carrying out ecological surveys and contributing towards long term planning around wildlife translocations into Nsumbu. The Workshop and Infrastructure technical advisor will oversee the technical, logistics, staff; and systems improvement surrounding all workshop and infrastructure related project activities including:

  • Organizing all labour efficiently and effectively and coaching team leaders in their job.
  • Help develop best performance, in line with supervisors and increased independence in job delivery.
  • Ensure efficient law enforcement operations through supporting transport and maintenance requirements of the fleet and machinery, including procurement of spares and fuels.
  • Oversee and coordinate the construction and maintenance of all necessary infrastructure.
  • Support project administration including procurement, budget development, operations controls and SOPs.
  • Develop long term planning and monitoring regarding activities for each department.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibility of the Workshop and Infrastructure technical advisor (WITA) is to improve the overall efficiency, safety and effectiveness of project activities relating to the growing vehicle and boat fleet, workshop operations, infrastructure improvements as well as general park management. You will be expected to initiate improved monitoring systems, enforce responsibilities, improve stock controls and management and supervise a workforce. You will be expected to advance the project objectives and image in all aspects. Typical departments that will be overseen include:

  • Fleet management
  • Workforce supervision
  • Infrastructure development and maintenance
  • Law enforcement logistical support
  • Project administration and development

Capabilities, competencies, and experience needed for the job

  • Tertiary education in a field relevant to fleet management, logistics and infrastructure;
  • Demonstrable experience (3 years) in one or all of the following remote environment disciplines: technical (construction, mechanics, fence building, fence maintenance, water systems, solar), conservation (game relocations, veterinary, conservation knowledge or training)
  • Computer literacy with experience in Microsoft office;
  • Clean and current driver’s licence;
  • Good leadership and people management skills;
  • Strong personal integrity and dependability;
  • Good report writing skills.

Terms & benefits

A competitive salary with benefits on an annual contract basis will be negotiated, with opportunity of increment according to performance.  Housing will be provided at the Nsumbu FZS camp.
