Maamba Energy Limited (MEL) is jointly owned by Nava Bharat Singapore Pte. Limited and ZCCM-IH plc. The Company owns and operates a large-scale coal mine and a 300 Megawatt coal-fired Power Plant to cater for the growing demand for power in Zambia.
Maamba Energy Limited is looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic professional to build a career under the Civil Engineering Section/Mining Department in Maamba, Sinazongwe District, Southern Province. The position on offer is:
Purpose of the Role:
The Civil Engineer provides technical engineering expertise, field supervision, and logistics management for civil construction and maintenance works, supporting the Senior Civil Engineer in delivering MEL’s civil works programme. They will supervise all civil and construction works at MEL’s mine, township, and office facilities ensuring quality and safety are maintained; planning budgets and purchase requisitions; overseeing construction execution and maintenance; and providing technical supervision and mentorship to junior civil staff.
Key Responsibilities:
Civil Works Planning & Logistics
Prepare budgetary proposals, quantity estimates, and cost plans in line with the approved civil works programme.
Prepare purchase requisitions for materials, equipment, and services; schedule material and equipment deliveries in coordination with Procurement and Stores.
Assist in preparing risk assessments for civil works activities; maintain an inventory of fixtures, fittings, and civil materials as required.
Civil Works Execution & Supervision
Supervise the execution of civil works — including site supervision, logistics arrangements, and coordination of the Civil Supervisor and work teams.
Ensure all projects comply with legal requirements, especially health and safety, and assess the sustainability and environmental impact of construction activities.
Inspect project sites regularly to monitor progress and ensure conformance to design specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements.
Provide technical solutions to construction problems encountered during execution; escalate significant technical issues to the Civil Manager.
Team Supervision & Development
Monitor daily manpower deployment and check attendance for all civil team staff and contracted workers.
In liaison with the Snr Civil Engineer, provide input to staff performance appraisals, identify performance gaps, and draw up development plans for junior team members.
Provide supportive supervision, mentorship, and technical assistance to Civil Supervisors and junior staff.
Health, Safety & Environment
Adhere to all workplace safety policies, regulations, and compliance requirements; lead by example in applying safe working practices on every civil site.
Ensure cleanliness and good hygiene at all civil worksites; communicate any unsafe conditions, accidents, or injuries to the Civil Manager promptly.
Reporting
Prepare weekly progress reports on civil works activities and submit on time to the Civil Manager.
Arrange for weekly progress photographs of ongoing works; maintain a photographic and written record of all significant construction milestones.
Required Qualifications
Grade 12 School Certificate.
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognised institution.
Paid up member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ).
Experience
Minimum 5 years of experience in Civil Engineering and Construction, with at least 2 years in a Supervisory capacity.
Demonstrated experience in construction supervision, quality assurance, and safety compliance on active sites.
Mining site civil works experience.
AutoCAD design experience for site layouts and construction drawings.
Skills and Abilities
Civil works execution — construction supervision, site logistics, and quality control.
Budget preparation, quantity estimation, and purchase requisition management.
Construction risk assessment and health and safety compliance.
Progress reporting and photographic documentation.
Microsoft Office — Word, Excel, PowerPoint (intermediate level).
Structural or civil design software.
SAP procurement module for purchase requisition added advantage.
Thorough knowledge of relevant engineering design codes and standards.
Attributes
Technical competence — earns trust of the construction team through engineering knowledge and hands-on credibility.
Supervisory authority — directs and holds accountable the Civil Supervisor and work teams effectively.
Safety-first — applies and enforces safe working practices on every site visit.
