Job Description
VAC-2026-0019: SENIOR ENGINEER – RENEWABLES

The role is responsible for the timely and effective delivery of CEC projects within the approved scope, schedule, and budget, while ensuring alignment with stakeholder expectations. In addition, the role leads the identification, assessment, and proactive management of project risks and issues that could impact successful project delivery, and supports project financing processes, including Lender’s Due Diligence, to facilitate the successful securing of project funding.
The position will report to the Senior Manager – Renewable Projects.

Key Accountabilities
- Timely preparation of detailed designs, functional specifications, and tender documents.
- Securing project approvals from the Governance Structures.
- Preparation of project timelines in consultation with relevant stakeholders like Supply Chain Management Department, Legal, and other user departments, etc. for progress tracking.
- Liaising with the Supply Chain Management Department on procurement, receipt, and storage of project equipment/materials.
- Liaising with the Legal Department on project related contractual issues.
- Diligent participation in both the technical and commercial evaluation processes to ensure the equipment/materials selected meets the project requirements.
- Implement the project in accordance with Projects Procedures and other relevant company policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance to all Safety, Health, Environment, Social & Risk (S.H.E.S&R) requirements as may be applicable, during project implementation.
- Submitting monthly status reports based on the developed project timelines by the fifth (5th) day of each month after the last day of the month to which it relates.
- Have oversight on all payments on the project and their status (i.e., whether paid or outstanding).
- Monitor and control the budgets for the projects.
- Preparation of Change Request Forms to facilitate formal amendments to the approved project baselines (i.e., cost, schedule scope).
- Formulation and updating of all relevant prescribed project documentation (issues register, lessons learnt, risk registers, etc) and closing out of issues raised therein in a timely manner.
- At project completion, prepare handover reports for submission to the relevant end users.
- Preparation, within 30 days of project completion, the completion reports and commissioning and/or decommissioning certificates.
- Must undertake all the Project Evaluation exercises within the stated durations and thereafter at intervals as may be deemed necessary by the Manager Projects Planning.
- Financial modelling, valuation analysis of current and new investment opportunities.
- Preparation of project Investment Paper for Project Steering Committee and CEC Board Approval.
- Conduct Due Diligence on prospective clients.
- Co-ordinate the activities of the multi-discipline, cross function project teams to ensure that technical solutions developed, and project profitability are robust.
- Monitor and control project progress against project timeline with particular emphasis on pace and quality work execution to ensure that projects are delivered on schedule for the company to deliver the intended benefits.
- Monitor and co-ordinate project work at all points of interface with other Companies/organizations to support project delivery.
- Monitor implementation of projects and constantly analyse and report on planned performance versus actual results.
- Monitor and review implementation to ensure accountability of all projects in compliance with legislation, governance policies, HSES requirements, relevant standards, and procedures as well as schedule and budget.
- Ensure that projects are formally closed and handed over to users as per project governance standards. Record lessons learnt and if necessary, recommend changes to policy or procedures to incorporate improvements.
- Provide timely, accurate and relevant reporting of deliverables and obligations on projects to appropriate stakeholders.
- Submit monthly status reports based on the developed project timelines by the 5th day of each month.
- Prepare structured business reports, which involves interpretation of complex material and making decisions based on imperfect information.
- Ensure appropriate engagement with key stakeholders to manage each one of them in alignment with the implementation strategy for each project.
- Interacts with Senior Management and External Advisors to produce results and develop long-term productive relationships.
- Provide guidance and leadership to direct reports to ensure optimum performance.
- Effectively manage growth and development of direct reports, effectively linking performance management, talent management, learning & development and employee value proposition to achieve employee engagement and optimum performance.
- Stay abreast of developments in areas of expertise and performs to the highest ethical and professional standards.
- Control costs by monitoring project expenditure and resource utilization and explore areas for cost reduction or plant performance improvements.
- Contribute to budget development process and ensure that costs are within the prescribed budget.
- Plan and control Departmental Budget.
To be successful in this role, you will be required to have:
- Grade 12 School Certificate.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering or equivalent.
- Experience in the power infrastructure market covering project development and management, preferably in the Energy and Utilities sectors.
- Experience in development, implementation and construction of renewable energy projects such as grid-connected Solar PV Plants.
- Knowledge of energy legislation and regulatory environment.
- Knowledge and experience in project management.
- Familiar with risk allocation principles and key project documents used for project financing.
- Strategic and analytic mindset with proven commercial and ability to multitask and handle multiple projects at once.
- Problem-solving orientation is critical to recognising and solving potential problems.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills to be able to present and articulate complex issues to diverse interested parties.
- Strong leadership skills include the ability to coach and mentor staff.
- Efficacious skills in project appraisal, initiation, development, planning, monitoring and evaluation.
- Knowledge in financial modelling and due diligence skills supported with superb interpersonal and stakeholder management skills.
