VACANCY ADVERTISEMENT: ENVIRONMENTAL OFFICER- WASTE MANAGEMENT

Lumwana Mining Company seeks to recruit a highly motivated and committed individual for the position of Environmental Officer- Waste Management to join the Environmental team. We are in search of individuals who can champion Barrick’s DNA by:

Reporting to the Senior  Environmental Officer, you will be responsible for the implementation of effective waste management practices across the Site and supporting  regulatory compliance, promotes the best environmental practices, and ensures alignment with LMC’s Environmental Management System (EMS)., ISO 14001 standards, and Barrick’s corporate waste management policies.

Your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Coordinate and oversee solid, hazardous, and medical waste management systems and operations on site.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the Waste Management Plan, incorporating best practices and legal compliance.
  • Ensure segregation, collection, transportation, storage, and disposal of waste are conducted according to applicable Zambian regulations and Barrick Environmental Standards.
  • Supervise contractors responsible for waste collection, treatment, and disposal to ensure quality service delivery and environmental compliance.
  • Monitor and report on waste generation trends, including quantities, types, and disposal methods.
  • Identify and implement waste minimization strategies (reduce, reuse, recycle) across departments.
  • Maintain proper waste tracking systems and ensure timely reporting into EMS and other platforms.
  • Coordinate waste audits and inspections and support external regulatory audits when required.
  • Develop and review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all waste management activities.
  • Ensure all waste handling activities are performed in line with ISO 14001 Environmental Management System standards.
  • Raise awareness and conduct training sessions on site-wide waste management practices.
  • Prepare and submit weekly, monthly, and annual waste management reports to the Environmental Coordinator.
  • Liaise with local authorities, regulators, and community stakeholders on waste-related issues as needed. 
  • Ensure all waste management personnel and contractors are inducted and trained in relevant safety and environmental procedures.
  • Report and investigate waste-related incidents and non-conformances, ensuring root cause analysis and corrective actions are implemented. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all waste generation, storage, transportation, treatment, and disposal activities across the mine site.
  • Ensure that all waste data is properly captured, validated, and uploaded into the required database systems as required.
  • Track and report waste generation trends and key performance indicators (KPIs) for internal use and external reporting.

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following requirements:

    • Full Grade 12 Certificate. 
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental  Science, Environmental Engineering, Public Health, or a related discipline.
    • Minimum of three (3) years’ post-qualification experience in waste management, preferably within a mining, industrial, or heavy manufacturing environment.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and practical application of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems (EMS), waste classification methodologies, and international best practices in industrial and hazardous waste management.
    • Proven experience in managing and supervising third-party waste management contractors and engaging with regulatory authorities on environmental compliance matters.
    • Sound understanding of applicable environmental and waste management legislation, including hazardous waste management regulations and compliance requirements.
    • Strong analytical, organisational, and problem-solving capabilities with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
    • Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage stakeholders at all levels.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and environmental reporting and data management systems.
    • High level of professionalism, attention to detail, and commitment to environmental stewardship and continuous improvement.
