About A Chance for Change Foundation (C4C)

 

A Chance for Change Foundation (C4C) is a Zambian non-profit organization committed to reducing poverty and improving livelihoods through sustainable economic

empowerment initiatives. The organization works with vulnerable communities to promote resilience, food security, income generation, and long-term community development.

Agriculture is a core pillar of C4C’s programming, with a strong focus on supporting smallholder farmers through climate-smart agriculture, market-oriented production systems, out-grower schemes, and sustainable livelihood interventions. C4C also implements internal agricultural production initiatives that contribute to organizational learning, sustainability, and impact.

 

Position Summary

 

Agronomist will provide technical leadership and oversight for agricultural production activities under C4C programs and internal agricultural initiatives.

 

Key focus areas include:

• Supporting farmer-based agricultural interventions and out-grower schemes

• Providing technical guidance to Extension Officers

• Promoting sound agronomic practices and productivity

• Supporting internal agricultural production activities

• Monitoring crop performance, production risks, and quality standards

• Contributing to learning, reporting, and program improvement

 

Duty Station, Eligibility & Contract Details

 

• Duty Station: Lusaka, Zambia

• Applications are only open to candidates currently based in Lusaka

• Employment Type: Full-time

• Contract Duration: One (1) year renewable contract

• Subject to an initial probationary period

• Reporting To: Director of Programs (DoP)

• Frequent field travel will be required

• Valid motorcycle riding license required

• Immediate start preferred

 

Key Responsibilities

 

A. Technical Leadership – Farmer-Based Interventions

• Provide technical leadership for farmer-based crop interventions, including chili and other approved crops

• Develop and guide implementation of crop production plans aligned to seasonal and quarterly targets

• Define recommended agronomic practices, input requirements, and production standards

• Develop input specifications and quantities for each production cycle

• Provide technical guidance and backstopping to Extension Officers during field implementation

• Conduct technical training and coaching for Extension Officers to ensure consistent application of recommended practices

• Monitor crop performance and recommend corrective actions where necessary

• Support identification and recruitment of farmers into C4C out-grower schemes

• Promote climate-smart and sustainable agricultural practices among supported farmers

 

B. Technical Leadership – Internal Agricultural Production

• Lead technical planning and implementation of internal agricultural production activities

• Develop production schedules, input plans, and technical protocols for internal crops

• Develop input specifications and quantities for internal production cycles

• Provide day-to-day technical guidance to farm teams and monitor adherence to production protocols

• Monitor crop health, yields, and production efficiency across internal agricultural projects

• Promote proper post-harvest handling, grading, and storage practices to minimize losses and maintain quality

• Support documentation of production performance, lessons learned, and sustainability initiatives

• Identify production challenges and recommend practical technical solutions

 

C. Monitoring, Learning & Quality Assurance

• Track and analyse key agronomic indicators, including crop survival, yields, and production risks

• Support collection, analysis, and interpretation of field data for reporting and decision-making

• Identify emerging risks such as pest outbreaks, disease, and climate-related impacts, and recommend mitigation measures

• Escalate high-impact agronomic risks and recommend appropriate corrective actions

• Support quality assurance and adherence to recommended agronomic standards

• Contribute to technical reports, learning documentation, and program improvement processes

• Support continuous improvement through field observations, lessons learned, and technical feedback

 

D. Coordination & Advisory Support

• Coordinate closely with Extension Officers to ensure consistent application of technical guidance at farmer level

• Provide technical input into quarterly planning, reviews, and target-setting processes

• Advise the Director of Programs on agronomic feasibility, production risks, and implementation opportunities

• Support coordination of field activities related to agricultural production and farmer engagement

• Contribute to effective communication and collaboration across program teams

• Represent C4C professionally during field engagements and stakeholder interactions

Required Qualifications

• Degree in Agronomy, Agriculture, or a related field

• Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in crop production and field-based agricultural systems

• Demonstrated experience working with smallholder farmers and out-grower schemes

• Experience supporting agricultural production planning, implementation, and monitoring

 

Required Skills & Competencies

• Strong knowledge of agronomic practices and crop production systems

• Ability to translate technical concepts into practical field guidance

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

• Good planning, coordination, and organizational skills

• Ability to train, mentor, and support Extension Officers and farmers

• Strong monitoring, reporting, and documentation skills

• Good communication and interpersonal skills

• Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams

• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
