JOB VACANCY: HEAD OF MINING OPERATIONS

1.0 JOB PURPOSE

The Head of Mining Operations is responsible for overseeing all mining activities, providing technical support to the General Manager, and leading the development and implementation of the framework for mining operations. The role also includes conducting due diligence studies, evaluating potential investment partners, offering technical services to mining houses, and performing technical audits on potential partners.

2.0 KEY RESULT AREAS AND PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

Annual Operating Planning and Budgeting

• Prepare annual plans and budgets to support mining operations and technical services.
• Monitor activities to ensure adherence to the budget and cost controls.

Mining Operations

• Lead the development and implementation of the operational framework for mining, monitoring progress and reporting outcomes.
• Formulate and implement value-adding partnerships, integrating machinery, financial support, and operational assistance for small-scale miners.
• Act as a technical leader in selecting viable small-scale mining partners.
• Conduct strategic technical studies and make recommendations for business and engineering options to senior management.
• Promote good corporate governance among the beneficiaries of company funds and influence decision-making for better business, financial, and technical practices in mining operations.

Mining Legislations and Auditing

• Enforce compliance with mining regulations and statutory requirements.
• Maintain a positive and safe work environment at all times.

Technical Services

• Evaluate potential investment and partnership opportunities.
• Manage operational relations with strategic partners.
• Work closely with stakeholders to ensure efficient and safe operations.
• Develop and review technical systems for selecting joint venture partners.
• Provide technical advice and insights to the Board of Directors.

Reports

• Report on the financial performance of the mining operation.
• Participate in reviewing reports from strategic partners regarding exploration activities.
• Ensure timely preparation and submission of internal reports to management and directors.

2.2 ESSENTIAL/DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

Professional Qualifications:

• Full Grade 12 certificate with 5 O’ Levels
• First degree in Mining Engineering/Geology from a recognized university
• A Master’s degree in Mining Engineering or Geology is an added advantage
• Blasting Licence
• First Aid Certificate
• Registered with:
  • Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ)
  • Engineering Registration Board (ERB)

Relevant Pre-Job Experience:

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in mining operations and technical services, with at least 4 years in middle management
• Experience in project assessment and financial evaluation
• Expertise in open-pit mining operations
• Strong understanding and interpretation of geological data
• Experience in managing dynamic teams and change processes
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and mine planning software (e.g., Datamine, XPAC, Surpac)
• Familiarity with mining regulations and project management

• Experience in mentoring and providing technical guidance to junior staff
