Job description:
General Role Purpose:
The Training Superintendent, Engineering and Mine Maintenance will be responsible for developing and executing of all Engineering and Mine Maintenance Trainings at Trident in line with national legislative guidelines and company policies and procedures. S/he will oversee the strategic development, preparation and delivery of training policies, procedures and material that strives to establish a positive health and safety culture. S/he will be responsible for the internal monitoring and audit of all Engineering and Mine Maintenance-related obligations at TRI and will be required to provide associated Maintenance Training reports as per organisational demand.
Core Specific Responsibilities – related to this Job:
- Evaluate instructor performance and the effectiveness of training programs and provide recommendations for improvement.
- Develop Training materials and assessments that are in line with Trident’s standard operating procedures.
- Confer with management and conduct surveys to identify training needs based on projected processes, changes, and other factors.
- Plan, develop, and provide training and staff development programs.
- Analyze training needs to develop new training programs or modify and improve existing programs.
- Train instructors and Mine supervisors to enhance knowledge and skill for a better performance.
- Prepare training budget for department or organization.
- Ensure that the training strategies are effectively and efficiently implemented and in line with the organisational goals.
- Design and execute a range of off job and on the job competency based training programs in order to meet Trident’s training and development needs.
- Evaluate compliance and competency based assessment outcomes; ensure that all on and off the job programs are professionally conducted and that quality standards are met.
Expected Deliverables from this job:
- Manage the scheduling of all Engineering and Mine Maintenance trainings and resources to meet operational and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain strong community and government relationships to synergise opportunities that complement Trident’s training programmes and encourage the development of local employees.
- Provide timely and reliable reports on training activities to assist in strategic planning and business decision-making processes.
- Coordinate and supervise the Engineering and Mine Maintenance training teams.

Operational Requirements
- Coordinate inputs for the business unit during the budget preparation process for senior management.
- Provide day to day management of the budget to ensure compliance with budget and forecasts highlighting any variances to management.
- Manage and report on controllable cost drivers such as attendance, overtime, task assignment, work performance and consumable items to meet budget targets.
- Accountable for approval of purchases and expenditure within delegated limits of authority.
- Monitor monthly costs and complete monthly accruals for areas of responsibility to ensure the departments’ operating costs are accounted for accurately
- Ensure budgetary constraints are adhered to by minimising wastage without jeopardising the quality of the services provided.
- Manage the costs associated with business management, including tenders and contract negotiations where required.
- Promote and adhere to appropriate internal methodologies, policies, procedures and standards.
- Consistently maintain a high quality of work across all allocated functions.
- Provide input/informed commentary, improvement opportunities and areas of risk to management.
- Control the quality of work output from the department by implementing an ongoing monitoring and audit process to ensure compliance against company standards.
- Ensure compliance with all statutory and company standards through training and development of staff.
- Participate and contribute to safe practice and environmental and Social Responsibility awareness.
- Demonstrate personal commitment with regards to safety, and environmental and social responsibility practices.
- Maintain a high standard of efficiency, safety and effectiveness.
- Provide day to day management acting as a technical reference point and mentor for staff to ensure work outputs are in line with strategic and business plans.
- Conduct formal career development discussions with employees to identify development opportunities and programmes that assist with defining future career progression possibilities.
- Review and implement longer term training initiatives for the unit.
- Promote and adhere to Occupational Health and Safety Policy and Procedures through consistently demonstrating and encouraging safe work practices.

- Minimum 10 years of relevant experience.
- At least 5 years’ management experience preferably in learning and development, including; staff supervision, budget management, strategic planning and evaluation we well as the development and drafting of training material / related policies and procedures.
- Experience in the Mining Industry is preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of risk analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to manage suppliers/contractors.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure, remaining on track and compensating for variances.
- Vision to perceive risks and opportunities with superior decision-making ability to act on these accordingly.
- Previous experience in senior roles and able to demonstrate management skills.
- Ability to develop solutions in challenging environment.
Qualifications (required for this job):
- Full Grade 12 School Certificate.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
- Formal qualifications in Learning and Development E.g. Diploma / Certificate in Teaching Methodology or the ability to obtain.
- Valid Drivers’ License.
