Zambia Sugar Plc. is a subsidiary of Illovo Sugar Africa (Pty) Ltd Group and is the leading sugar producer in Zambia.  Its main activities are the growing of sugar cane, the production and marketing of sugar and other sugar downstream products.

The Company invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons to fill the position of Artisan Electrician in the Agriculture Department.

The position reports to the Irrigation Supervisor, within the Agriculture business function. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out planned maintenance (PM) routines, fault finding and rectifying as required to support the maintenance function and also furnish the operations team with safe, compliant and reliable irrigation operation. All work carried out on the Agriculture Irrigation systems will be recorded on the computerised maintenance management system (Maximo).

Key Performance Areas:

  • Performance of maintenance of all field low voltage and medium voltage (3.3kV) electrical equipment in accordance with statutory, mandatory and company defined requirements.
  • Responsible for historizing the equipment condition of site electrical systems through the effective use of the CMMS.
  • Responding and resolving breakdown scenarios through fault finding of the E&I systems.
  • Co-ordination with other disciplines and contractor support personnel.
  • Maintain a time attendance register, during team meetings.
  • Ensure correct use of tools on every task/assignment (for self and subordinates) and look after company provided tools and equipment.
  • Carry out daily/weekly physical inspections of electrical machinery and equipment.
  • Assess and evaluate equipment faults – whilst utilizing RCA (5-Why) methodology, investigate equipment trips and failures.
  • Provide feedback – feeding into and updating procedures and methods to reduce downtime.
  • Ensure proper use of feedback tools by completing and submitting respective feedback to the Irrigation Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Implement predictive maintenance methods to highlight potential breakdowns.
  • Attend to repairs and breakdowns as and when required; effectively and safely work within allowable MTR for that equipment.
  • Ensure standby equipment is always available.
  • Ensue that works are done to approved company procedures and standards.
  • Carrying out energy isolation – in accordance to approved company energy isolation procedure.
  • Ensuring that all safety aspects regarding maintenance of the machinery are followed.
  • Completing ‘Take 5’ and monthly inspections/audits on SHERQ issues in the area of responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Minimum specifications / Requirements areas
  • Grade 12 School Certificate
  • Craft Certificate in Electrical Engineering.
  • Technician or Diploma will be an added advantage.
  • Should be 18 years and above.
  • Must have three (03) years hands on experience in an agriculture/factory production environment.
  • Possess supervisory skills and be a team player.
  • Must be an effective communicator and self-driven.
  • Proven experienced knowledge on maintenance, repair and installation of electrical and instrumentation systems i.e. MCCs & their associated starters, medium voltage (MV) Switchgear, Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) and Centre Pivots, transformers and associated substation equipment, etc.
  • Knowledgeable and experience in electronics, control & instrumentation.
  • Experiences in the issuing and receiving of permits to work, & electrical SHERQ systems.
  • Experiences in risk assessment techniques.
